Rich Whiteley’s Ruby Fizz CD

Bay Area guitarist/songwriter Rich Whiteley was born in Wilmington, DE but currently resides in Tampa. Good thing, too. Whiteley’s 2009 CD-release Ruby Fizz is chock-full-of swarthy, blues-laden riffs and grooves that bend the most sensitive ear for the purpose of pure enjoyment.

After reading Jay Cridlin’s review in the St. Pete Times of GreyMarket’s performance at WMNF’S Tropical Heat Wave last week, we couldn’t resist the musical investigation that followed therewith. The editors of Bay Area Beat are always excited when local musicians get the opportunity to perform at musical events that feature headlining National Acts. Though it certainly gives our dedicated community radio station a much deserved nod, an appropriate segue would be, say, a Bay Area “Heat Wave” featuring acts like Adrian Ray, Rebekka Pulley, Chucky Luv, Basic Rock Outfit, or GreyMarket. Ok I’m off my soap box. Let’s continue with the discussion at hand.

The GreyMarket is a one-stop-shop 3-piece electronic rock band (drummer Michael Gargiulo , guitarist / vocalist Cave McCoy s and a laptop) that’s pretty self-sufficient and efficient. The human duo performs, produces, mixes, and masters GreyMarket’s material and, amazingly, markets, promotes, and subsequently books tours, and as well as creates and manages the band’s web site. Hailing from Tampa, Grey Market’s ardent commitment to self-sufficiency, and, above all, willingness to do “whatever it takes to get the job done right” is seemingly evident in their latest CD Some Orbits Will Never Decay and their 2006 release Dauntless.

It’s quite amazing to conceptualize that GreyMarket is basically a two man operation.

If you browsed the GrayMarket website and listened to their music you would discover gallons of different musical flavors, including new wave, neo-UK and plenty of USA off-beat goodies. GrayMarket is Bronski Beat in the meat and poultry department. Masters of Reality (remember them?) in the frozen food section. RadioHead in produce. The Cure down the health and beauty isle. Queen and U2 in the ethnic food section. When you’re finished shopping, your grocery bag will include enough eclectic influential musical ingredients that will forever feed your starving musical soul. Yes down load and buy there music. If you’re an80’s child and your CD collection is void of 80’s hair bands, then you would love Grey Market’s approach to new wave post punk. The next time you invite musical guests to dinner, serve ‘em something from the GrayMarket. We guarantee the tasty morsels will delight those ears who need a break from Paula, Randy and Simon!

It appears talent comes in all shapes and sizes. And ages. Five-piece outfit Bet Me I’m Lying consists of two brothers and three neighborhood friends living in Harbor Bluffs (That’s in Largo, a stone’s throw from the Belle air Bridge) and, according to the group, they’ve been together a little over a year. Brothers Jackson and Brendan Marquardt (guitar and drums respectively), Kirk Adikes (guitar), Jamie Craske (bass) and guitarist/vocalist C.J. Harris have an average age of 13. Yes, indeed, they’re quite young but very talented. In September 2008 the boys recorded a crude but interesting 9-song demo with Bob Mast (Jackson’s guitar teacher) at Clearwater’s By the Way Studios. The songs were written by Bet Me I’m Lying, with the exception being Craske, who joined the band shortly after the songs were written. Two months later, the group has performed at several local events, including “Concert in the Park” in Largo, the Clearwater Thanksgiving Day Turkey Trot, the Closing Ceremonies for West Pinellas Little League in Indian Rocks Beach, and various private parties and charity events. Their CD release concert will be

at the Harbor Bluffs Park in Largo on May 23 at 5 p.m. They are also scheduled to play at the Sheraton Sand Key in early June and, hopefully, throughout the summer.

Bet Me I’m Lying is more or less an alternative a rock band; most of the songs are up-tempo yet display a degree of melody. This is quite monumental considering they’ve yet to reach high school. They’re adamant about not being a clone of, say, Jonas Brothers, or any type of teenage boy rock band usually heard on the Disney Channel or Nickelodeon. The songs have some really catchy guitar riffs and guitar solos. What’s most impressive is the lyrical content. Songs like “Slowly Fading” discusses global warming; “Hey Nietzsche” was based on a poem written by Adikes describing 19th Century German Philosopher Frederic Nietzsche’s deterministic existential view. For a bunch of preteens, these kids definitely have something special in store! There’s plenty to rave about if you’re still hungering for old school hard rock or heavy metal. Included in Early Rising’s musical repertoire are special consultant Larry LaFalce, former Wise Guy bassist/vocalist Jody Gray, singer Addam Santana, and lead guitarist Steve Malagna. Mastered by famed engineer Stephen Marsh, Early Rising songs such as “Fly the Wind,” and the especially poignant “In the Land of the Living” and “Stand Alone” – complete with really scintillating acoustic introductions, bring back memories of what hard rock music was all about: cool, clean, crunchy chords layered with satisfying crunch throughout.

I wasn’t sure what to do. Perhaps the answer comfortably sits with a visit to Planet Pu-C, Tampa-based Suggestion’s reported home world. Guitarist Alin, an alien DNA experiment gone awry, insists that Suggestion’s new five song CD Gorilla Warfare is, indeed, reminiscent of crushing rebellious countenance savored with sanguine metal rhythms and riffs. The guitars remind me of Paul Di’anno-era Iron Maiden with plenty of high-end crunch to spare. Songs like “Misanthropic Lycanthrope” and my personal favorite “It Might be a Chicken.” With an image crossed between The Residents, Mushroomhead, Gwar, and Battle for the Planet of the Apes, it is imperative to witness these Bay Area creative geniuses first hand. This is a live show you must, for sanity’s sake, investigate. However, it is “suggested” that rebel Pu-C scientist Pu-Ci forever lurks in the musical shadows… Just click on the picture to be methodically whooshed away to the realm of the Suggestion!

SRS Alexis A. Pierson, or Lexi for short, is currently on USAF active duty and will probably read this review as she removes the Iraqi from her military issued combat boots. She s an incredibly talented singer songwriter from the Bay Area and, prior to her deployment December 2009, managed to assemble a strong following throughout the Bay Area. This self-titled 2007 release cleverly demonstrates Lexi’s unique style of folk singing; songs like “Society and I” and “It’s Over” bring to mind thoughtful images of Bob Dylan, Ani Difranco, or, more appropriately, a young vibrant Pete Seeger. Lexi’s lyrical artistry, combined with soft, almost evocative musical salience, meticulously documents her raw, unadulterated life experiences; it’s fairly obvious that “Misunderstood” is about her private struggle with career choices. Above all, Lexi Pierson’s poignant musical and lyrical sincerity is both memorable and welcome. She scrutinizes unpretentious nooks and cautiously combines fictional crannies which, of course, make for a sensitive yet capable musical journey. According to Ms. Pierson, she’s planning to return to the Bay Area and pick up right where she musically left off: recording and performing her exceptional brand of singer/songwriter storytelling and killer performances with a casual sofa-styled comfort. This time, however, SRS Alexis A. Pierson will have plenty more gut wrenching, in-your-face experiences to draw upon this time around. We can’t wait!

Lorna Bracewell well- represents the Bay Area music scene with both melodic yet blistering musical prowess and passionate fervor.
The Psychedelic hippie/trippy power Dance/pop outfit and Mad Monk, LTD recording artist Beatnik Castle is, perhaps, one of the Bay Area’s true hidden treasures. This 2009 CD release not only features the smokin’ hot Lenny B radio edit version of the hit single “Will U B Mine?” but a Electro Remix from noted Miami DJ Cato K and, of course, techno, 70’s disco, Latin, industrial, but an exquisite mesmerizing acoustic version from Beatnik songwriter/producer Quincy B. Scovill. As of this writing, “Will U B Mine?” is being added and subsequently played on dance mix radio shows across the country, as well as XM/Sirius BPM and 13 countries in Europe. What’s most impressive, though, is the lovely, seductive persona of Francillia, Beatnik’s lead singer who, for all intense and purposes, skillfully and soulfully executes a Rihanna-styled vocal semblance coupled with the hard edge of, say, Pat Benatar or a female-styled (dare I say?) Ne-Yo. Francillia’s a rarity –a stunning, captivating presence who can really sing – or should I say, “sang.” This charming power-packed Tampa-based/US Virgin Islands singer adds soulful flavor to every version of “Will U B Mine?” included on this release, and her voice, especially on the slower, more somber “Rock/Island version” (chock-full-of-crunchy heavy metal guitar leads!) Granted, this is only a maxi-cd single but Scovill’s inclusion of the aforementioned versions (including the Lenny B Extended Club Mix) makes for quite a pleasant experience. Scovill is a creative, old school songwriter rooted in old school vibes and personalities. “Will U B Mine?” in its original version, (also included herewith), was originally released in 2008 by Scovill Avenue, yet another unrecognized Bay Area gem whose 2007 Mad Monk, LTD CD “Big House” amazingly garnered seven Grammy nods from the National Academy of Recording Arts & Sciences Committee last year, including the coveted categories “Record of the Year,” “Album of the Year,” and “Song of the Year”. Incidentally, “Will U B Mine?” in its original version, was in the Grammy category “Dance Single of the Year” as well. For the record, Quincy B has allowed me to preview some of the new material (including a hipped-up cover of an Alice Cooper song from 1971!) from Francillia’s solo cd “Temptation” and, believe you me, 2010 will be a heckuva year for this extremely talented Bay Area duo!
